June Books

Hello again, everyone!

It has been a busy summer, but I'm back!  I started two online classes today, so that's got me back on this computer.  I will start with a brief review of the books I read in June.  Let's see what I can remember.

The boys and I loved this last installment of the All-of-a-Kind Family series.  I think this might have been the only one I missed as a kid, so I especially enjoyed it.

I think I picked up these next two at the public library while the kids were doing the Summer Reading Program.  'The Stranger in the Woods' is the true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years.  Fairly recently.  Fairly interesting.

Hmm, can't remember much from this one, but just by taking a look at myself and my lady-like tendencies, it must have sunk in.  (Ha, ha.)

Also from the public library, this was a lot of fun to look at, and amazing to see the precision of these artists from back in the day.

The boys and I listened to this book, and it's a good thing we did, because it was long!  A mostly true story, about the start of the breed of horses known as Morgans - I've only ever heard of them because that's the kind of horses Almanzo had at some point in the Little House books.

Also from the public library.  Also fairly interesting.  Seems to me the main thing they're good at, according to the author, is getting their babies to sleep through the night - and that's nothing to sneeze at.

I read this with the boys, and while I loved the series as a kid, I'll have to say, 'That was a dull book, Bert.'  Very sweet though.

Also from the library - this was interesting.  I learned a lot, and if I actually had all the presidents straight in my head, I might have been able to remember more of it!  This book covered the relationships between the most recent presidents and their mothers, starting with George W. Bush and going back through about 12 presidents before him.  The most interesting fact that stuck out to me, was that a startling percentage of the boys who grew up to be president had their mother's maiden name as their middle name, and they weren't even always the oldest boy in their family, just the one who got the maiden name.  Sorry, Josiah and Caleb!  Or, maybe, you're welcome!

This was a novel, loosely based on facts, about Einstein's wife.  If the author's extrapolations are correct, Albert wasn't much of a husband.  Interesting book, though.

Now this was a freebie I got on my Kindle.  It is about a Hebrew girl who became one of the wives of the Pharaoh back in Ancient Egypt.  This was pretty entertaining, and there were lots of cool details about how people might have lived back in those days, but the interpersonal relationships were striking me as a bit too 21st-century-ish to be authentic.

This is the last book I read to the boys in June.  Mildly amusing, not Gary Paulsen's best work, in my humble opinion.  It's about a random group of middle school boys who became friends while stuck in a school bathroom together during a tornado warning.  One has a stuffed cat in his backpack, hence the title.

So, my best recommendation for the month of June would have to be 'First Mothers.'
